If you have made a commitment to yourself to stop drinking, congratulations! The road to being alcohol-free isn’t easy, but it is 100% worth it.

Benefits like improved health, clearer decision making, and closer relationships are all motivating reasons to give up alcohol.

However, it’s easier said than done. That’s why today we are going to share our 5 tips to help you learn how to stop drinking for good.

    1. Tell a Few Close Friends and Family

It is a common mistake to try to pioneer your path to sobriety alone. You may feel ashamed about drinking, or tentative about making a commitment to quit.

These reasons are completely understandable. However, we urge you to set those fears aside and confide in a few close friends and family members. You will be amazed at how relieved you feel when you get this off your chest.

While some people might be confused about your decision, those closest to you will love and support you through your journey.

    1. Find an Online Community

After solidifying your support group in real life, it is helpful to find an online community where you can share your story. Being online allows you to connect with those that are struggling with the same things you are, and it allows you to remain anonymous.

There are quite a few apps out there to help support you! We recommend the IAmSober app to get you started!

    1. Read About Sobriety

Another amazing way to dig deeper into your journey is to read about sobriety. Some highly recommended books are This Naked Mind by Annie Grace, and The Sober Survival Guide by Simon Chapple.

These experts have been through it all and are ready to share their knowledge with you!

    1. Find a Meaningful Activity

One solid way to beat an addiction is to focus on replacing the activity. If you’re used to drinking every evening before you go to bed, try placing a new hobby there. Here are some things you can try instead:

  • Go for a walk
  • Journal
  • Go down the Youtube rabbit hole
  • Call a friend
  • Bake a new recipe
  • Learn an instrument

And more!

Give yourself the freedom to find a hobby you truly love and look forward to every day. This will help distract you from drinking and find fulfillment in a whole new way!

    1. Seek Treatment

Depending on your personal situation, it might be best to seek treatment for alcohol use disorder. There are incredible addiction treatment centers that can help you quit alcohol.

When finding a treatment center, make sure to look into factors like cost, the amount of individual and group therapy you will be receiving, reviews, and inpatient vs. outpatient programs. Finding a good match will help you on your road to recovery!

Learn How to Stop Drinking

There are many paths to an alcohol-free life. Some people require addiction treatment, some find sobriety through AA, and some kick the addiction on their own.

If a method helps learn how to stop drinking, then it is valid and effective. Try not to compare your journey to sobriety against others, because your story is unique!
