If there is something that all new parents could benefit from, it is their baby getting a better night’s sleep. The key here is comfort; when your baby is comfortable and at the right temperature, they are more likely to sleep better and longer. Here are six steps you can follow to get your baby sleeping through the night.

  1. Getting the temperature right

Of course, like anybody else, babies need a comfortable temperature to get the best night’s sleep. So, the first thing that you need to consider is whether your baby’s bedroom is too hot or too cold. The ideal temperature for a baby’s room is between 16C and 20C – any colder or warmer and you’ll need to make changes to the room.

There’s no need to monitor the temperature directly, just use common sense to establish whether it’s too hot or too cold. If you feel warm then your baby probably does too – plug in a fan or open a window to circulate air. If your room is too hot, then you might need to consider layering up your baby’s clothing, and making sure that you are settling the right clothes, which brings us to step two.

  1. Choose fitted sleepwear

It is important to select the right kind of clothes for your baby to sleep in. It may be the case that in the warmer months your baby actually only needs a babygrow. But as the year passes and the nights get colder, it may be necessary to go much further. The secret here can be in layering the clothes that you baby sleeps in.

This makes it might easier to alter their temperature. Around the age of three months, you can begin dressing your baby in fitted sleepwear. Ideally choose one-piece options that don’t have ribbons or ties that could distract your baby or make them feel uncomfortable.

  1. Selecting the right clothes fabric

It is also important to select the right kind of fabric. Once again this is something that will vary depending on the time of year. It is best to choose clothes made with natural fibres rather than man-made options. These absorb sweat more effectively, and pall moisture away from you baby’s body.  However, it’s also worth noting that individual babies will have difference preferences.

  1. Think seasonally

It is important to make the point here that the time of year drastically affects the sort of suitable sleeping conditions for babies. Many babies can easily sleep through the noise of having the window open in the summer much better than they would sleep with the window shut and the room becoming stuffy.

Equally, when the temperature drops you need to be ready to make changes. Some parents do not find that blankets themselves are necessary. Others, however, make use of lightweight blankets – again, preferring natural fabrics such as cotton, wool, or hemp. Avoid heavy blankets as these can make babies overheat.

  1. Consider swaddling

Swaddling a baby is when you wrap a baby in a blanket so that only the head is exposed. This can be a very effective method of helping your baby sleep, as the wrap actually simulates the experience of the mother’s womb. Babies can be swaddled up until the age of three or four months, after which they will likely be able to sleep better without it.

It is best to follow advice on swaddling your baby safely, as there is some risk of issues such as overheating if babies are swaddled too tightly.

  1. Feel your baby’s skin

The easiest way to understand your baby’s level of comfort is to feel their skin. Hot, sweaty skin indicates that your baby is too warm, and would benefit from layers being removed or cooling the room. You should your baby by placing two fingers on their stomach, back, or neck. You shouldn’t check your baby’s hands or feet, as these are typically cooler than the rest of the body.

If your baby is too hot, remove a layer and check again in ten minutes to see if there has been improvement.
