It can seem impossible to keep up a healthy lifestyle during the exam period, especially when we find ourselves overwhelmed with other assignments too, but we’re here to tell you that it’s not as difficult as it seems! Exams are an important part of your education, but what happens when you have assignments piling up while you’re studying for those big tests? Keeping up with a healthy diet while studying for exams can be a difficult thing to do for some, but it’s vital that you do so. While snacking on crisps, biscuits, sweets or any other comfort food of choice might be your go-to when it comes to hitting the books, you should avoid eating too much of this. Instead, you should opt for healthy, nutritional meals that can give your body and mind everything it needs for optimum function in order to improve your concentration levels, and turn to healthier snacks like fruits and nuts to fill that study snacking craving. Of course, sugary snacks are good as little rewards for studying, but too many of these can have adverse effects on your focus.

Avoid Excess Caffeine

We get it. You wake up early, force yourself out of your nice, warm and comfortable bed and get ready to set off for a day’s study in the library. On the way, you take a detour for the nearest coffee shop and order the largest Latte they have and add a few extra shots of espresso just for good measure – just us? In all seriousness, coffee and energy drinks may work to give you a temporary energy boost, but it won’t be long before you crash. Instead, an early night, some good quality sleep and the right foods for breakfast can set you up for the day.

Like we mentioned before, sleeping plays an important part in getting you energised for a day full of study. While it can be disheartening to spend all your time studying during the day, and then have to switch off and go straight to bed rather than start that Netflix binge, you’ll thank yourself in the long run if you choose to get some shut eye instead. Late night cramming can also prove to be ineffective, even if you want to be better prepared for your exam. You’ll be better getting to sleep earlier, and waking up a little earlier in the morning to go over your notes before your exam. If you’re tired, not only will the information be less likely to stick, but you could also find yourself struggling to focus and stay awake during the exam!

Take Regular Breaks

Breaks are important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle during exams, and short, regular ones are the best. Studying can be tiring, which is why we often find ourselves struggling to concentrate after a while, but giving ourselves a chance to refresh will improve your concentration over all. You could fill your breaks with some light stretches or exercise, make a cup of tea or even use the time to get some fresh air by going for a quick walk. Just make sure that you step away from the books! If you’re prone to social media binges, avoid using your mobile during breaks. A 15 minute break can turn into an hour easily – take it from someone with experience!
