We all love and depend on our smartphones and computers. They are a great way to connect with family who may be far away, there are thousands of games to choose from and play, and you can surf the internet to pick up valuable information. There are people who use it purely for fun and for those who use the internet as a way to earn a little money. Some people also use it for school and furthering their education.

Our screens can be quite valuable, but there are also dangers of excessive screen time that you should keep in mind.

Many people who sit in front of their screens all day, tend to eat. It could be boredom that makes them want to eat constantly or it could be all the advertisements that they see about foods. Kids who are brought up with more than an hour or two of screen time each day are more likely to suffer from obesity than others who are outside playing. Adults who sit at their home computers and stuff have a higher risk of developing heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, and other health issues. There is also a potential for them to suffer from a heart attack earlier in their life. All of these issues have a direct connection to a lack of physical activity.

Eyesight Problems

If you look at a screen all day without wearing glasses for screens, you could end up damaging your eyes over time. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is becoming a very common issue for people both young and old. It comes from looking at a screen and its main symptoms include, blurred vision, eye strain, red eyes, and even trouble focusing on what you are trying to read or see on the screen. Though it is true that most all people over the age of 40 will develop the same type of issues, it is becoming a problem for children, teens, and young adults.

Difficulty Sleeping

When you watch a computer screen at night, right before you go to bed, you will not sleep as well as people who turn it off well before they close their eyes. It could be the fact that your brain “wakes up” because of the blue light that is on a computer screen, or it could be that you are overstimulated by the things you are viewing on the screen. Either way, poor sleep can be linked to a variety of issues and should be something that you want to avoid feeling the effects of.

Childhood Behavioral Delays and Problems

Kids who are allowed to watch television or mess with other screen types for extended periods of time each day face a lot of negative consequences. They may have learning disabilities, emotional and social issues, be more violent, and more. All it takes is two hours a day of television or video games and the effect can cause a lot of bad things.

Isn’t It Time to Unplug?

While you are watching your screen, important things are going on around you. Your children are seeking your attention, your spouse wants a good conversation, and life is passing you by. You are also putting yourself at risk for some pretty major health issues and concerns in the future. Is this something you want for yourself or your children? Talk to your kids and explain that although it is great to use these devices some; there are reasons we need to try to limit ourselves while doing it. If you work from home or have a child that is homeschooled, avoidance may be harder. For this, you simply need to practice safe habits while on the computer, tablet, or phone. However, if this isn’t the case and you tell your kids about the dangers; you should be prepared to unplug for yourself a little more often as well.
