Did you know that over 60 million Americans are infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii every year? And that’s just one parasite!

You might think that you only need to worry about parasites in 3rd world countries, but the reality is, there are plenty found right here in the US.

So how can you tell if you have one or not?

Here are 5 common warning signs of parasites in humans you should watch out for.

      1. Itchy and Inflamed Rash

If you have skin problems, it can be due to the clothes you’re wearing, the detergent you use, and any allergens in the air.

However, parasites can also cause these symptoms. For example, you might have excessively red skin that’s itchy. Your skin might be flaking as well.

If these “allergies” have flared up out of nowhere, and you haven’t changed any of the above (and it’s not currently allergy season), then that might be a sign of a parasite.

      1. Unexplained Weight Loss

The very definition of “parasite” is an organism that benefits off of its host. With some parasites, they may leech so many of your nutrients that you start losing weight without even trying.

For example, tapeworms live in your intestines and hog all the nutrients you get from your food. In this case, weight loss can be extreme. You may also have stomachaches and a loss of appetite.

      1. Anemia

Many people in the US have anemia for various reasons, but it can be caused by parasites too. This is because again, the parasite is leeching all the nutrients from your food. Not only that but also your blood tissue.

This, combined with possible blood loss through your stools, can bring on the onset of iron-deficiency anemia.

      1. Seizures

If you’ve never had seizures before and you have no family history of it, this can be suspicious.

While there are other health problems that may be responsible for your seizures, it’s possible that the cause is a parasite. This is because many of them interact with your brain, which can trigger these seizures.

      1. Die-Off Symptoms

When you rid your body of parasites, you can have symptoms from them dying off as well. This is because some parasites will release toxins that’ll have a negative effect on your body.

Symptoms to look out for include headache, aches, pains, fatigue, rashes, and stomach pains. You might even have depression, anxiety, and some emotional and/or neurological disorders.

Watch Out for These Signs of Parasites in Humans

Now that you know some of the common signs of parasites, you should be able to spot the first warning signs and get treatment promptly. This will help keep you and your family safe and avoid becoming sick from parasites in humans.

Parasites will typically rear their heads when you’ve gone outdoors or been to a foreign country, so always keep an eye out.
