Four out of ten Americans turn to chiropractors first when they have back pains before they pay a visit to the mainstream doctor. This statistics only prove that many people believe that chiropractic therapy offers true relief from pain. If you’re still unsure just how effective chiropractic treatment is in providing relief from many common aches and pains, the following facts from different studies have been gathered for your perusal.

Back Pain and Sciatica

The United States National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that back pain is the most common reason why people turn to chiropractic therapy. Statistics reveal that more than 70 percent of Americans who are suffering from back pain opt for chiropractic treatment for relief.

Mainstream medical treatments do not give as much relief as chiropractic therapy can when it comes to providing relief from sciatica symptoms. Findings published from the European Spine Journal showed that chiropractic adjustments had a success rate of 72 percent. But corticosteroid injections only had a success rating of 50 percent while physical therapy had 20 percent. This goes to say that chiropractic therapy is more effective in  bringing positive results compared to other forms of treatment.

Another study also showed that 94 percent of individuals dealing with low back pain experienced a 30 percent relief after a month of chiropractic treatment. Although those who were prescribed with medications also reported the same level of pain relief but only 56 percent of them experienced it. In other words, more patients experienced relief from low back pain after undergoing chiropractic treatment.

Twenty six clinical trials were reviewed last 2011 to find out the effectiveness of several types of treatments. The said review also looked into the effectiveness of spinal manipulation as a form of treatment for patients suffering from low-back pain. The authors of the said review found out that spinal manipulation works as effectively as other forms of interventions when it comes to improving function and pain reduction.

Spinal manipulation was also found effective in treating chronic low back pain and there is strong evidence to support such claim, according to a 2010 review conducted by experts.

Neck Pain

A study conducted in 2003 showed that chiropractic treatment led to faster recovery among 183 patients who had neck pain. These study participants were grouped in random to receive physiotherapy, spinal mobilization therapy or general practitioner care. Findings from the clinical outcome measures suggest that chiropractic or spinal mobilization therapy provides faster recovery compared to general practitioner care and physiotherapy.

The efficacy of chiropractic treatment is also proven by the fact that 32 National Football League Teams make use of chiropractic treatment for their neck and back problems. They also turn to chiropractors for the overall conditioning of their football athletes.

A study which had tension and migraine headache sufferers as participants revealed that more than 20 percent of them experienced a 90 percent drop in the frequency of attacks. Moreover, the same study also showed that 50 percent of the participants claimed to have experienced a significant reduction in terms of pain intensity.

In fact, 230 peer-reviewed articles suggest that chiropractic treatment has the capacity to provide cure, prevent the onset and significantly reduce the burden associated with migraines and headaches.

What Makes Chiropractic Treatment Effective?

It offers individualized care.

The effectiveness of chiropractic care can be attributed to the fact that such treatment is highly individualized. Chiropractor doctors make use of specific adjustments that allow certain parts of the body to be placed in proper position so that self-healing can start to take place. And since the treatment is individualized, your individual progress will also be taken into account to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your chiropractor visits.

It is a drugless approach.

Another reason why chiropractic treatment works effectively is because it makes use of a drugless approach. Therefore, a person who visits a chiropractic centre should not expect to be prescribed with any medications. They can just enjoy its benefits without the need to worry about experiencing side effects that many people do after taking prescription drugs. Chiropractic treatment operates on the principle that the body is equipped with a natural ability to heal itself. The physical manipulations that chiropractors do helps jumpstart the innate self-healing ability of the body. Of course, all these are being done while keeping safety in mind all the time.

It employs a holistic approach.

Chiropractic treatment employs a holistic approach when providing care to pain stricken individuals. Through holistic treatment, individuals become more capable of moving, thinking and performing at an optimum level. Chiropractic care also aims to reduce stress that has been adversely affecting the person’s immune system so that positive energy will be produced. This way, achieving homeostasis within one’s self will be made possible. When homeostasis is observed disease prevention is more likely to follow.

It prioritizes the health of the spine.

Chiropractors pay special attention to the person’s spine. Almost all functions taking place inside our body emanates from the central nervous system where the spine also plays a key role. When it is not aligned, proper functioning of the nervous system will also be affected. Unfortunately, every organ and every cell of the body is being controlled by the nervous system. Therefore,  its function and ability to preserve and restore health will also be affected in a negative way. So, the spine needs to be properly aligned at all times to reduce one’s risk for back pain, as well as other health issues.

Now that you know how effective chiropractic treatment is in providing relief from several health issues, prepare to visit your chiropractor today. Your initial visit in a chiropractic clinic would entail an interview process so that your health and medical history will be assessed. After obtaining this information, a management plan that is tailored to your individual needs will then be designed. Then, treatment of your condition and monitoring of your progress will follow suit.
