Over 8 million people have used Invisalign.

That’s millions of people with straighter teeth and a healthier-looking smile without the embarrassment or pain of braces.

But is the process really that much faster than braces?

Keep reading to discover the Invisalign process and see if it’s the right choice for you.

Invisalign Process and Timeline

The complete process of Invisalign usually takes most adults between 12 and 18 months, depending on how much straightening is required. Every individual will be different, so be sure to consult a dentist to get a more personalized Invisalign timeline.

Step 1: Impressions and Records

During your first appointment, you’ll have pictures and impressions taken of your teeth. This is so dentists and Invisalign producers have the original shape of your teeth. Then, they can create custom aligners to help slowly move your teeth to straighter positions.

Impressions are done digitally so that you’re able to see your teeth from all different angles. You might even have crooked teeth that you didn’t know about!

Step 2: Invisalign Manufacturing

The second step involves the Invisalign manufacturer creating your aligners. Your dentist will give their approval and then they’ll be shipped to your dentist so that you can start using them.

Step 3: Try Them On

During your next appointment, you’ll be given your first set of aligners. The dentist will make sure that everything is fitting appropriately. You might also be given attachments that are painless and invisible and will help shape your teeth more quickly.

Step 4: Keep the Process Going

Your dentist will send you home with your first several trays of aligners. You’ll change these out at the intervals that they instruct (usually every couple of weeks) and over the next few months, you’ll be seeing major changes!

When you first start wearing Invisalign, you’ll be wearing our aligners all day except when you eat and clean your mouth.

Your dentist will set up followup appointments to check and make sure that everything is following the timeline and working appropriately.

Step 5: Straighter Teeth and a Brighter Smile

Once you’ve completed all of your trays and your smile is straighter and brighter, you’re ready for your final appointment. You’ll meet with your dentist where a retainer will be shaped for you.

This might be a retainer that you wear only at night or it could be a permanent retainer that sits behind your teeth. This is necessary because teeth like to move back to their original positions and a retainer prevents this from happening.
