Royal Commission on the NHS Part IV

The NHS and Other Institutions

In this part of the report we look at the important links which the NHS has with services and institutions outside it. Perhaps the most important of these is the relationship between the NHS and local government. Many health services and programmes of care will be fully effective only if there are close relationships with the complementary services provided by local authorities. We consider, too, the important relationships, particularly so far as education and research are concerned, which the NHS has with universities. Finally, we consider the relationship between the NHS and private practice, a subject which was generating much heat when the Royal Commission was set up.
