This is the first event in the ESRC Seminar Series Revitalising the Health Equity Agenda (ESRC ES/M003027/1), which has the overarching aim of revitalizing policy, practice, and academic work on inequalities in health. The series is a project of the Special Interest Group on Health Equity in a Glocal World, Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing.

In 2008, the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health released its landmark report. The first conference in the series will assess progress toward health equity since 2008, with special reference to achievements and obstacles within the EU.• Keynote 1: Peter Goldblatt, (Institute for Health Equity, University College London) Reviewing progress on health inequalities in Europe
• Keynote 2: Jennie Popay, (University of Lancaster) Empowerment as an Essential Strategy for Reducing Health InequalitiesAlong with these two keynotes, the conference will feature four interactive workshops, on health equity and child poverty; health equity at the local authority level; social determinants of health in an age of austerity; and the case of Scotland from 2008.The conference, and the series, will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers working in health and social policy. There is a small charge for the event of £45, to include a delegate pack and food and refreshments, and £25 for postgraduates and early career researchers. A small number of bursaries are available.
