Being overweight or obese may affect your self-esteem because you feel that you look unattractive. It impacts your lifestyle at home, work and your social life. However, excess weight is not only a cosmetic issue. It can also raise the risk for other serious health problems. For many people, dieting only helps a little, and they are not able to get to a healthy weight by modifying their food intake. Sometimes crash-diets will seriously damage health, or it is simply not possible to follow a strict regime for months. Places like The Hospital Group and other clinics offer solutions that are surgical and non-surgical to help you lose weight and keep it off.

Health Risks

The effect on your health of being overweight or obese are many and all of them are life-threatening. The most common risks are:

• Coronary heart disease
• Type 2 diabetes
• Stroke
• Hypertension
• Osteoarthritis
• Sleep apnea
• Some cancers
• Depression and anxiety

Bariatric surgery is one way to solve the problem of obesity. There are several procedures that will help, so you can talk to a surgeon and choose the best one for you. Some of the most popular solutions are:

A gastric band – also called a lap band or stomach band, this is a silicone ring the surgeon inserts around the top of your stomach. It reduces your appetite by helping you feel fuller longer. This is possibly the most popular solution and usually results in 50 – 60 per cent weight loss within two years. This procedure is mainly considered for people who have a BMI of 30 or higher.

A gastric sleeve – also known as sleeve gastrectomy is mainly for a specific problem. A portion of the stomach is removed, which reduces its capacity. Considered more aggressive than a gastric band, it is not a major operation. It’s a good option for people who may not be able to have gastric bypass because of other health concerns.

Gastric bypass – is an extensive surgical procedure that is non-reversible. Patients can expect a 75 – 80 per cent loss of their body weight. This procedure is proven to work and is recommended for people with a BMI of 40 or higher. It offers many health benefits such as:

• Curing most type II diabetes
• Curing sleep apnea, joint pain, asthma, fatigue and arthritis
• Reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease
• Possibly eliminating the need for medication for hypertension
• Drastically reducing cholesterol levels

A gastric balloon – is a non-surgical solution for short-term weight loss. It reduces hunger and is recommended to kick-start a weight-loss program. Many people lose 10 – 20 kg in about six months. It is a good option for people who are overweight but not obese with a BMI of 28 – 30. You might consider this after pregnancy or before a wedding or other special occasion when you want to look your best. It’s an out-patient procedure that usually takes about 20 – 30 minutes and you can go home the same day.

Being overweight or obese not only has a negative effect on your self-esteem, it also seriously damages your health. There are several procedures that can solve this problem once and for all to improve your appearance as well as your overall health.

  1. Robert Jones says:

I realize you’re talking – mainly – about people with an extreme problem, for whom simple restriction of food hasn’t worked (although I can only assume that’s because they haven’t restricted it enough) but while obesity will damage your health, extensive gastric surgery might not do it a lot of good either.

There are surely better ways for people “who are overweight but not obese” to lose weight than to insert a gastric balloon – you’re making it sound like a routine life-style option, an easy procedure without drawback that you can adopt as a quick fix to what is more likely to be a longstanding underlying problem. This isn’t what I would consider to be promoting good health.

  2. How can you support surgery for a cure to morbid obesity?

The risk to health are not worth considering!

There is only one way to lose weight and that is to eat less calories than one needs to maintain ones weight .

I new someone who had surgery she is dead now, after her operation she melted Mars Bars and drank them through a straw.

It is not expensive to lose weight if you just eat a basic foods diet of porridge with nothing else for breakfast no sweeteners honey etc. one wholemeal sandwich for lunch filled with a very thin slice of cheese, or 1boiled egg, or other small amount of unprocessed protein. Then for your evening meal you have a good portion of boiled potatoes, a small portion of unprocessed meat, or fish, or cheese, or 2 eggs. Fill your plate with lots of unprocessed. Vegetables, Using processed food will never work as it is full of added sugars such as sucrose, glucose, corn syrup etc. just drink water I drink it hot when you are thirsty. Don’t eat between meals hard but nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

Losing weight is not easy as you may have to change a life times habits so it will take you time to eat health foods again. Forget food TREETS enjoy things that make you feel good which are healthy for you.

Refined sugar and refined Carbohydrates upset your insulin balance and you will want to eat continually this is nothing to do with hunger. The best way I can describe it is if when you are not hungry someone gives you a bar of chocolate if after eating one square you can’t put the rest back for later it is not hunger you have upset your insulin balance.

Dr. Hillary Jones said don’t drink or eat anything that has a list of ingredients on a label (as it will have added sugars and refined carbohydrates).

How do I know this I am living proof that this works,as I was obese in my 20’s I lost my weight by calorie counting and by trial and error I have maintained a healthy weight ever since. Only in recent years have I found that eating in this healthy way is the best way eat healthily without having to ‘go on diets’ I am 69 years old fit and healthy my doctor confirmed this . No medications very good blood pressure and other readings.

And I enjoy exercise in a fun way not at the gym dancing, walking gardening, canoeing, having a nice massage. I love my life without thinking that food and drink are the best pleasures that are available for me.
