Addiction is a serious problem and, if you’re the one suffering, it can seem hopeless. But, there is hope, so you should never give up. The fight is always worth it in the end. At the same time, it can be hard when you live it “day to day.” Here’s how to pick the best rehab program for you so that you can stick to it without going insane.

Residential Programs

Residential programs are programs where you check into a facility and get help from experienced medical staff and possibly a psychotherapist or psychologist. These programs tend to be expensive, however, and this is what usually puts people off about them.

How much are these programs? They can range from $10,000 to $40,000 and even up to $100,000 or more for luxury rehab centers. Some non-profit organizations can help you pay for the treatment you need, and some insurance companies will help you pay for part of the cost of care, but many people find that they need to pay a significant portion out of pocket.

This can prevent people from getting the treatment they need but, if you can afford it, this is often the most effective way to rehab yourself. The minimal treatment time is typically 28 days, but some programs extend treatment for 60 or 90 days.

Outpatient Programs

Outpatient programs do not force you to check into a treatment facility, and you are free to come and go as you please. Usually, the treatment is done both at a center and at home. Part of the process involves extensive lifestyle changes, however, and you often need a support group to help you avoid situations that led to your addiction in the first place.

For example, some neighborhoods and people may become triggers for alcohol or drug abuse, and so you may have to either move or live with someone who can become a positive influence on you – helping you avoid “tough situations.”

One treatment that’s particularly effective for outpatient programs is biophysical detox. This method focuses on detoxing the body of metabolites – remnants of drugs and other substances which may still be in the body.

Often, even when the initial detox is finished, there are still elements of drugs in your body’s fat tissues. Over time, these substances are released into your body and can cause cravings which lead to a relapse. The detox rids your body of these triggers, helping you cope with the physical, and even the psychological, aspects of addiction.

Extended Programs

Extended programs can be helpful in certain circumstances, since they involve long-term monitoring and counseling. You may benefit from this if you’ve been a long-time user.

Short-Term Programming Models

Short-term rehab programs seem like a bad idea on the surface, but these can sometimes be better than long-term models that focus on continued treatment. That’s because long-term models sometimes make the patient dependent on the doctor or program, rather than moving towards self-reliance. Regardless of the program you choose, ultimately, your goal is to become self-reliant and self-confident in your ability to stay drug and alcohol-free.
